Hello Green Drinkers, This month, on Tuesday the 5th of October, Green Drinks will take a look at cycling as a form of sustainable transport as well as the idea of bicycle recycling. In the UK, 4 million new bicycles are purchased every year. Unfortunately that "out with the old, in with the new" mentality means more and more discarded bicycles are appearing in landfills around the world. Cycling is similarly on the rise in Ireland, due to schemes such as the Dublin Bikes and Bike to Work, which is undoubtedly a positive development yet even the keenest cyclist can be more eco-friendly. Rothar is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to address these issues by promoting bicycle recycling as a method of reducing waste and encouraging responsible bicycle ownership. By repairing unwanted bikes and selling refurbished parts, the company challenges the throw away mentality of industrialized society. The founder of Rothar, Anne Bedos, will be on hand at Green Drinks to offer us an insight into the concept of bicycle recycling and the positive effects it can have on the environment as well as the local community.
